Early Life 

Annie Potts was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 28 1952. Her parents are Dorothy Harris (nee Billingslea) and Powell Grisette Potts. Annie Potts has two older sisters, Mary Eleanor (Potts) Hovious and Elizabeth Grissette (“Dollie”) Potts. She grew up with her family in Franklin, Kentucky.


Annie Potts graduated from Franklin-Simpson High School in Franklin, Kentucky, in 1970. She also attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in theatre.

Annie Potts was interested in stage and films at an early age. She had a wide variety of prominent roles in both television and film. She made her debut on the big screen in 1978 in the comedy film Corvette Summer with Mark Hamill. In 1980, Annie Potts played Edith Bedelmeyer in Goodtime Girls. Annie Potts also played a supporting role in the Ghostbusters film series and then achieved fame as pragmatic interior designer Mary Jo Shively on the CBS television sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993).

She also featured as Mary Elizabeth M.E in Any Day Now, Sophie Devere NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, God of Carnage. She featured in the film version of McMurtry’s Texasville, a sequel to The Last Picture Show GCB.

The American actress had a recurring role on Foster(2013-2018); Potts starred a leading role in the 2012 Hallmark Channel original musical movie The Music Teacher, a high-school music teacher who is on the verge of losing her beloved school music program because of district budget cuts.  From 2017 till the present, Anne Potts has been a series regular on the CBS sitcom Young Sheldon as Connie “Meemaw” Tucker.

In 1973, Potts married her college sweetheart, Steven Hartley. Shortly after their marriage, the two were involved in a serious automobile accident. Steve lost a leg to the accident while Potts suffered from multiple fractures.  They got divorced in 1978. That same year, Potts married Greg Antonacci; their marriage lasted for just a year. She also married Scott Senechal ​in 1981. Potts and her husband Scott Senechal both had a son, Clay, together before they divorced in 1989.

Annie Potts is now married to James Hayman. They have two sons, James and Harry. She also has a grandson, Cassius. Cassius was born on July 12, 2021.
