Born Illiana Lydia Petrovna Mironova to a Russian father and Scottish mother in Chiswick, London, England, Helen is the second of three children.

Her siblings are Vasiliy Petrovich “Basil” Mironov (Brother) and Katherine Rogers (Sister).

Her mother, Kathleen Alexandrina Eva Matilda Rogers was the daughter of a butcher who supplied meat to Queen Victoria and her father, Vasiliy Petrovich Mironov, played the viola with the London Philharmonic before World War II before becoming a cab driver and later a civil servant.

When Helen was 9 years old, her father legally changed their family surname to Mirren. According to her, her upbringing was “very anti-monarchist.”
