Matthew Garber was only active in the movie industry for four years, but it was enough time to make him popular due to his immense talent. Matthew was a British child actor who had roles in only three movies during his lifetime.

The movies Matthew featured in are Mary Poppins in which he played the role of Michael Banks; the other two are The Three Lives of Thomasina and The Gnome-Mobile.

Walt Disney Pictures made all three movies. He was active in-between 1963-1967 during which he featured in all three movies.

Garber died of haemorrhagic necrotising pancreatitis ten years after he retired from the industry in 1967. He contracted hepatitis which later spread to his pancreas.

Matthew Garber was born in Stepney, London to parents who were actors. Garber’s younger brother, Fergus was born in 1964, the same year Matthew played his infamous role of Michael Banks.

His father, Louis Leonard Garber (referred to as L.L Garber) and mother, Margot Garber both performed on the stage.

Not much is known about Matthew’s family; however, Matthew himself was considered to be a cheerful young man. He was known to be bright and spirited, often pulling jokes on his friends, a voracious reader of adventure, poetry, mythology and also a lover of sports.

Karen’s father discovered Matthew’s talent and called his attention to a Disney casting. His ability to use artful dodges like screwing up his nose, squinting as well as brushing his hair back earned him his acting debut at the young age of seven.

His first role was in Disney’s The Three Lives of Thomasina in 1963.

In that same year, Matthew and Karen Dotrice were hired to play the role of Jane and Michael Banks, the role in which Matthew is popularly known for.

The pair teamed up again in the Disney movie The Gnome-Mobile which was released in 1967.

As both Karen and Matthew Garber were very close, she recalled how cheerful he was during his lifetime.

Karen said Matthew had a great sense of danger and fun, a daredevil who in another life could have been a race car driver.

Matthew also loved being naughty, jumping off of buildings and many other things. Karen said she regretted she did not keep in touch with him before his death.

He died at the age of 21 of haemorrhagic necrotising pancreatitis on 13th June 1977 at the Royal Free Hospital which is in Hampstead, London, United Kingdom. This was ten years after his retirement from the movie industry.

His body was cremated at St. Marylebone Crematorium three days later.
