Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr is an American actor, poet, musician, painter, and photographer. As an actor, Viggo Mortensen has starred in many movies right from his early childhood. Examples of movies that he starred in are The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Hidalgo. He received many awards, including a Screen Actors Guild Award, British Independent Film Award, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and three BAFTA Awards. Early Life

Viggo Mortensen was born in Watertown in Upstate New York to Grace and Viggo. His date of birth is October 20, 1958. Viggo’s parents are Viggo Mortensen Sr and Grace Gamble. His Danish father is from Norway, while his mother is an American. His American mother made him American. Viggo Mortensen can trace his ancestry to different nations because his maternal grandfather is from Canada. His paternal grandmother was from Trondheim in Norway. When he was a child, his family moved a lot. They emigrated to Venezuela in South America, Denmark and eventually Argentina. 

In Argentina, they lived successfully in Cordoba, Chaco and Buenos Aires. There Viggo Mortensen attended primary school and learned Spanish. Also, his father runs a poultry farm and ranches. Viggo was baptized Lutheran, which was the tradition of his father.  At this stage, two more sons were born into the marriage. Viggo Mortensen brothers are Charles and Walter. Then the marriage grew unhappy, which eventually led to his parent’s divorce. 

When Viggo was seven, his parents sent him to a boarding school, isolated at the foot of a mountain. At the age of eleven,  his parents divorced. Mortensen’s mother moved back to the States. This made Viggo and his brothers move back to New York, where he attended Watertown High School and performed well as a good student. When Viggo Mortensen graduated from High School in 1976 and moved to St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he earned a degree in Spanish and politics. Viggo Mortensen is a citizen and longtime resident of the United States. As part of his early life, he made his first film debut with a small part in Witness Moses Hochleitner.

Viggo Mortensen Acting Career

Viggo Mortensen is an acting legend. He has appeared in many films like “Captain Fantastic ” 2007 and Eastern Promises. In Captain Fantastic, he has no problem being naked. Aside from Captain Fantastic, Viggo Mortensen has starred in The Fellowship of the Ring, playing the character of Aragorn. In 28 Days, as the character Eddie Boone, the Young American as the character Carl Frazer and in Hidalgo, which was a film directed by David Cronenberg. During his film career, Viggo Mortensen has been nominated as best actor and won for his stage performance in Bent. 

Early Acting Career

Mortensen began acting in movies when he was little. But his first movie role was in The Purple Rose of Cairo. His scene was deleted from the final cut. After that film, he appeared again on the Witness, where he played an Amish farmer. He was chosen for this role because the director thought he had the right face for the part of an Amish man. Although Viggo Mortensen had also been cast for another role as a soldier in Shakespeare in the Park’s film Henry V, he chose to act in the Witness. 

Viggo Mortensen went on to be cast in the role of Bragg on the TV series”Search for Tomorrow” in 1985. In 1987, Viggo performed in Bent at Coast Playhouse, Los Angeles, which won him a Dramalogue Critics’ Award.  The play is about homosexual prisoners in a concentration camp. Aside from that play, Viggo Mortensen guest-starred as a police detective on the hit TV series Miami Vice in 1987.

In 1999, Peter Jackson cast Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.  Viggo was a last-minute replacement for Stuart Townsend and would not take the part he’d it not been for his son’s enthusiasm for the book. Mortensen received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Aragorn in the film and was ranked No. 15 on a 2015 survey of the 100 Greatest Movie Characters. He was regarded as the best swordsman by Bob Anderson, the film’s swordmaster. 

Personal Life 

Viggo Mortensen holds dual American and Danish citizenship, and he stated that he was brought up speaking English and Spanish. In 1986, Viggo Mortensen met Exene Cervenka and married her on July 8,1987. They had a son named Henry Blake Mortensen, who later played on-screen with his father, Viggo Mortensen. Viggo and Cervenka later separated and divorced in 1997. Since 2009, Viggo has been dating actress Ariadna Gil. In speaking about his family’s struggle with dementia, Viggo says that he has four grandparents, aunts, and uncles who battle with the disease.
